On to Destiny, Act III sc. iii

He's sticking with the plan. Being cool is the way to get Wendy back. Mr. Minestrone is going all in!

On to Destiny, Act III, sc. ii

What's a surefire way to look cool in school? Smoking! I tried my best to make this scene where Mr. Minestrone sparks up his first cigarette as prophetic as possible - - If this were an 80s sitcom, the audience would be screaming NO! STOP! Alas, there is no one to help him. On to Destiny, indeed.

I won't see you before the Holiest of Holidays, so Merry Christmas! See you next week!

In some crazy twist, Beardo and Mr. Minestrone went to the same High School, although, like the Fonz, Mr. Minestrone was a Senior a few times over by the time Beardo enrolled. And here Beardo is making time with Minestrone's girl! WTF! After such an impressive spectacle to propose marriage (people did that back in the '50s) this appears to have failed to capture the heart of Mr. M's belle.

On to Destiny, Act II, sc.v

I like this joke. I used it once before, where the punchline was "How am I supposed to be fewer bums on the streets," in response to "Be the change you'd like to see." I had no joke that derived from the narrative of the story, so had to jam in a gag that's totally unrelated. I hope it doesn't distract too much. I think the $100 bill turned out pretty snappy, if you ask me :)

On to Destiny, Act II, sc. iv

When a champ boxer tells you to scram, you get the hell outta there! When I was drawing this, I literally felt empathy for Beardo. I mean, this was such a devastating moment for him, It cost him his dream, and we know how poorly he copes with it. This turning point really hurt my soul a little bit.

On a separate note, I loved the parallelism in the final two panels.

On to Destiny, Act II, sc. iii

This is one of my favourite pages I've ever coloured. It's modelled after an old Cuban barbershop, and really captured the mood I was looking for. In any case, here we have it, Beardo and Mr. Minestrone meet for the first time, and they get rushed into a bad decision. Destiny indeed. How will this affect Strikin' Bram Cotter's chances of landing a good gig with NASA?

Hey! There's Mr. Minestrone, back in '69! He sure looks like a groovy dude. So, Beardo needs a spiffy haircut to even the odds and get that job and fulfill his dream! The plot thickens. My favourite part of this page is the Cuban fellow who can't wait to tune in to watch John Lennon be an activist.

The coach's prophecy is bang on, though nobody will know it yet. Here's our first declaration that our protagonist is moving 'on to destiny!' Good luck to him! What a beautiful spot he lives in, in what I can only imagine is near Cape Canaveral where NASA launches rockets. It looks like things are going just fine for Beardo (wait, is his name Strikin' Bram Cotter?! NOW we KNOW!)
